Beacon South West

Top Cornish Hotel Steps Ahead with Beacon South West

Bedruthan Steps Hotel is finishing the busy summer season with a bang having been awarded the highly coveted Beacon status in recognition of its business excellence and 250 per cent growth in turnover in the last three years. The hotel joins an elite group of companies in the Beacon network, including TJ International, Sharp's Brewery and Rick Stein's The Seafood Restaurant and will play a key role in promoting the success and spearheading the growth of the region.

Bedruthan caught the attention of Beacon South West because of its financial performance, its positive culture and focus on providing its customers with an excellent experience. Beacon South West is a South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) initiative which brings together the region's most forward -thinking companies to cultivate enterprise excellence in the region.

Bedruthan Steps Hotel

Since 2003, the management team at Bedruthan Steps Hotel has invested more than £3m on hotel refurbishments and the construction of a new conference and events centre. This expansion has enabled the hotel to extend its offering to the business community, gaining an entirely new stream of revenue and as a result, becoming an all year round business, rather than just seasonal. These initiatives plus a continued focus on delivering great holidays to its core market, has seen the hotel's turnover increase by 250 per cent.

The business has also paved the way in the area of sustainability and is passionate about supporting the Cornish economy. Sourcing food from local suppliers, the menus are distinctively Cornish and seasonal and the chef enjoys using unusual ingredients such as wild garlic from local woods and sorrel from the fields. The hotel has recently, as part of its strategy to dramatically reduce it carbon footprint, appointed a sustainability manager - the first and only hotel in Cornwall to create such a role.

Bedruthan Steps is one of 198 Beacon companies in the region and will now be invited to attend regular Beacon Boardrooms where Beacon companies meet to discuss business issues, share their experiences and brainstorm best practice.

Sue Baker, director of Beacon South West, comments: "Bedruthan Steps Hotel embodies so much of what Beacon stands for. The leadership team at the hotel is dynamic, ambitious and driving through new initiatives all the time. They have much to teach their peers, such as the importance of market research which they rely on to get an edge over their competitors. We are looking forward to the contribution the company will make to the Beacon network."

Debbie Wakefield, director at Bedruthan Steps Hotel, says: "We are delighted to be recognised by Beacon South West and are excited about the opportunities it will provide to meet other like-minded business leaders in the region to share ideas for further development. It is a fantastic endorsement of the positive business practices that inform everything we do"

Like Bedruthan Steps Hotel, many companies within the Beacon network are pioneering in the field of sustainability. To capture and build upon this expertise and knowledge, Beacon South West is hosting a conference on the theme of sustainability on 13th September. Beacon companies from across the region will gather in Cheltenham to consider the challenges and opportunities surrounding the sustainability agenda.
